Getting Ready at Mom's house

Once we got back from the hair salon there was a bunch of cold cuts waiting for us. All of the ladies sat at the dinning room table and had sandwiches while I tried to laugh away my nervousness.

Then.......I put my dress on.....

John Paul Jones

Today Kyle took me to his ship so I could see where he works (and where he is going to be living for the 8 months that he is away from me :-( I have to say it was really cool! It kind of helped to put presidents day in perspective a little bit. Standing on the heli-pad on the back of the ship with the big American flag flying in the wind was really humbling. Kyle showed me everything, he was a really good tour guide! Then we went home and he kicked the crud out of me at Risk. All in all a good day, for him haha!

It was fun to see Kyle get saluted when he came on the ship, my officer and gentlemen!

View from the back of the Ship, the Coronado Bay Bridge is in the background

USS John Paul Jones, tied to the pier.

The Ship's # on the side of the ship. JPJ is DDG-53.

Another shot of the back of the ship

Front of the ship, the big stop sign looking things are the radar discs. Notice the big gun in the front? That their 5-inch gun. The "five inch" part means that the shell (the bullet) is five inches long....damn!

Rady Childrens Hospital

This is one of the hospitals that I would LOVE to work at. I drive past it when I am driving north to La Jolla and it was one of the Hospitals I first applied to when I moved to San Diego. They have quite a large NICU and they also have a very prestigious New Graduate Residency, complete with Mentors, classes, rotations throughout the hospital.

Check it out here

I am hoping that I might be eligible for the New Grad Residency even though I am not a "New Grad" anymore. I e-mailed the Nursing Recruiter today, keep your fingers crossed for me!

Why I really find Med Surge Frustrating!!!

Last night I admitted a patient who came up to the unit around 1030 (I get off at 11). So I was trying to get some of my paperwork done for the night shift. On the ER fax her diagnosis was COPD exacerbation and cellulitis (deep tissue infection). She came into the ER because she was so short of breath she couldn't walk, so what do you think she said to me when she came upstairs?

She has to take off her oxygen mask to say to me "help me downstairs so I can go smoke."

Now her right leg was so swollen that even the slightest movement was painful for her but she didn't care. I tried to convince her to stay since it was so late but she refused "I don't want to answer any of your questions and I don't want to listen to your lectures, baby. Just leave me alone." (mind you she is sating around 86% during this)

It is always hard dealing with patients like this, firstly because you know that these behaviors are just harming her, but at the same time it is an addiction. But if you are so short of breath you can't even walk, why go and smoke? I just don't understand it. And if you don't want to accept any of our care, why would you want to stay at the hospital?

Many of these patients just don't care about solving their heath problems, which is (in my opinion) the worst part of dealing with med surge patients. I find it very dis-satisfying dealing with patients who don't care one way or the other what happens to them, they still smoke and they still let their diabetes go out of wack because they just don't care. I mean it's not EVERYONE but it does feel like I deal with that a lot..

I can't wait to get a new job....

My new desire

Man I really really really really really want an iphone. A bunch of the nurses at work have them. (I am already a big apple user with the ipod and the ibook and the religious usage of itunes). When they first came out and they were $400 + dollars I didn't want one because I KNEW I would drop it and brake it. But now for Christmas they lowered the price to $199 and it's still that cheap. And I have seen people drop it and nothing, not one scratch on it!

Oh why oh why did I have to upgrade my At&t phone in October!!!! Now I have to wait until 2010 or spend $300.00 ARG!

I'm telling you right now that the likely-hood of this being a splurge purchase during kyle's deployment is incredibly high...possibly a birthday present to myself (I can wait until September!)

Windsor Pilates

Look it's Me! Haha yeah right!

So when I was in high school my mom bought these Pilates videos from an infomerical and I did them with her a few times. I actually really liked them a lot and when I saw her commerical late night after work, I decided to fork over the $9.99 and try out her new "circle" workout and try and get back into the "groove" if you will.

I really love the workouts. I am hoping that It will help me loose some belly fat as well as improve my flexibility. My hamstrings are in-humanly tight and I want to turn into Gumby girl!

In order for me to track my progress on the blog every time I do a workout I am going to give myself a gold star!

With some determination I'm sure I can do it!!!

Today I did the 50 min fat blaster workout!!!

Operation Baking Gals

So I have decided to go on a baking jolt today/tomorrow and do some baking for "Operation Baking Gals" an online site that send baked goods to our soliders overseas. I got involved through a fellow Baker/Blogger who sent some stuff last cycle and decided to sponsor a team this time around. I think I'm going to send some of my famous double chocolate chip macademia nut cookies and some peanut butter ones. I also want to make a pan of brownies for my chuch bake sale this weekend. YAY BAKING!

It's been nice having the day off, time to myself! YAY

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE, CONSIDER YOUSELF LUCKY!

O.K. so that might be a little drastic of a statement, but seriously Government offices really impresses me sometimes. By impress I mean that they do leave an impression, not necessarily a positive one. But I digress….

I went online to find my local Social Security office so I could go and get my name changed (After careful consideration and talking with my wonderful new husband I decided that I’m going to go with Sara Connie Oldlastname Newlastname, so I will essentially have two middle names.) The online search told me that the San Diego office was open Monday-Friday from 8-5. O.K.

So I drag my tired ass out of bed at 7am on Monday morning so I am able to get to the office on time. I get there and lo and behold the big sign on the door says Open 9-4:30 (grumble grumble) So I spent the time going and running a few errands and make it back to the office at 9:05. There are literally people flooding the place, people lining up outside, people everywhere. So I have to go and take a number. TWO AND A HALF HOURS LATER I got to go to Social Security Mecca (otherwise known as the window with the employee on the other side). She looked at my marriage license gave me a receipt and sent me on my way.

Waiting in line at Social Security: 2 hours
Actual help time at Social Security: 1 min 30 seconds (the girl typed fast!)
Getting to see a Rep get spit on by a small child: Priceless!
